Additional hair-count gains in a combination trial
Microneedling plus 5% minoxidil produced a larger average hair-count increase than minoxidil alone.
Dhurat et al. · 2013Fine-needle treatment of the scalp, with suitability, comfort and aftercare discussed before you begin.

A device with fine needles makes controlled, tiny punctures in scalp skin. Researchers are studying how the natural wound-repair response may influence signalling around hair follicles. Your consultation covers the treatment area, device, preparation and aftercare.
Microneedling is a procedure with its own preparation and aftercare. The device, treatment area and individual suitability should be discussed before proceeding.
See the appointment stepsTrials in men with pattern hair loss reported greater average gains from microneedling plus 5% minoxidil than from minoxidil alone. These combination results do not predict the outcome of microneedling alone or with PRP.
Microneedling plus 5% minoxidil produced a larger average hair-count increase than minoxidil alone.
Dhurat et al. · 2013The microneedling/minoxidil combination had larger average density gains than either treatment alone.
Bao et al. · 2020Randomised studies in men with pattern hair loss have reported greater average hair-count or density gains when microneedling was added to topical 5% minoxidil than with minoxidil alone. This is encouraging evidence for the particular combinations studied, with two examples explained below.
The clearest findings here relate to microneedling with minoxidil. They do not establish the same benefit from a standalone appointment or a PRP combination. Devices, schedules and follow-up differ, so your own plan and suitability need to be discussed. Study protocols are not instructions for using medicines.
100 men randomised · 12 weeks
No microneedling-only group. This does not prove the same benefit from a standalone session.
60 men · 24 weeks
Small groups and limited follow-up. Devices and schedules differed from the earlier trial.

Talk to Becky about your next stepSome scalp conditions can be worsened by microneedling. A consultation and a clear understanding of the cause of your symptoms come first. Active irritation, infection or unexplained inflammation should be medically assessed.
Redness, discomfort and pinpoint bleeding can occur. Infection is also a risk. Ask Becky about preparation, what to expect afterwards, products to avoid and when to contact the clinic if you have a concern.
Compare what happens at each appointment, the published prices and the questions to ask about evidence and suitability.

Yes. The 12-week programme includes three PRP and microneedling sessions, alongside the other published inclusions.
Ask a qualified healthcare professional before using a device on your scalp. Incorrect devices or use can cause harm, and some scalp conditions may be made worse.
