Treatment questions

PRP or scalp microneedling: what is the difference?

When two treatments are offered for hair thinning, it is natural to ask which one to choose. Before comparing prices or packages, it helps to understand what actually happens during each appointment.

A CLEAR STARTING POINT

PRP uses a blood sample to prepare platelet-rich plasma for scalp injections. Microneedling uses fine needles to make small punctures in the scalp. They are different procedures; neither can be chosen reliably from a symptom or a price alone.

Is microneedling the same thing as PRP?

No. PRP includes taking and processing a blood sample; microneedling is a needling procedure. A combined appointment should still be explained as separate steps. Ask which procedures are being proposed and what each is intended to add to your plan.

Is one proven to work better than the other?

The evidence does not justify promising that one will work better for you. The British Association of Dermatologists notes uncertainty around PRP and limited evidence for microneedling. A clinic should explain the limits alongside any potential benefit.

Can PRP and microneedling be combined?

This clinic’s £895 programme includes three PRP and microneedling sessions spaced four weeks apart. It also includes other appointments, home care and support. A package listing explains what is offered; it does not demonstrate that combining procedures will improve an individual person’s outcome.

How do the individual prices compare?

The published prices are £195 for PRP and £75 for scalp microneedling. Compare the full proposed course, consultation and follow-up costs as well as one visit. A lower session price does not establish which option is appropriate.

What if my scalp is sore, inflamed or irritated?

Raise those symptoms before booking a procedure. The American Academy of Dermatology notes that microneedling can worsen some conditions. An assessment of the cause comes before deciding whether either treatment belongs in your plan.
